Branding and Package Design
Alex Ko is a designer at Council Design and an Industry Coach at Stanford’s d.school. He won a Core77 Design Award for his work in branding and package design for Ploom. Alex is also a graduate of the Product Design Program at Stanford University.
Alex Ko came by class to share his experience with designing the branding and package design for Ploom, an upstart tobacco company based in San Francisco.
Ploom uses a vaporizer to create a cleaner, less toxic experience for smokers. Note that the crisp, minimal design of the packaging and display is designed to communicate this point. It also serves to distinguish the product from the sea of in-store labeling found in traditional product displays. Other challenges illustrated are how to communicate a novel & slightly controversial product in an efficient, honest, and compelling manner.
